Star Valley High School Golf Team Tryouts Monday, August 10 & Tuesday, August 11

Who This Is For

These tryouts are for players who are new to the team this year, including anyone who tried out last year and did not make the roster. If you’re trying out for the first time, or trying again, this process is for you.

Welcome and Thank You

Thank you for coming out for the SVHS golf team. Trying out for a team takes courage. Putting your skills on display for coaches to evaluate isn’t easy, and we don’t take that lightly. Whether this is your first time picking up a club competitively or you’ve tried out before, your interest in this game we all love is what makes our program worth running. We’re grateful for every golfer who shows up ready to compete.

Why We Hold Tryouts

Tryouts aren’t about excluding people; they’re about coaches getting to know you. We need to see your swing, your short game, your decision-making, and how you carry yourself on the course before we can coach you well. Every player’s ability and potential looks different, and tryouts are simply the fastest, fairest way for us to learn what each of you brings to the team.

The Skills Screening

Each candidate will spend 20 minutes with the coaching staff, during which you’ll be observed demonstrating your ability in six key areas:

• Grip and Setup – the fundamentals that everything else is built on
• Putting – mechanics and ability on the green
• Chipping – short-game control around the green
• Iron Contact – ball-striking quality and consistency
• Driving – distance and control off the tee
• Etiquette and Coach-ability – how you carry yourself, respond to feedback, and respect the course and your fellow players

We’re not just watching mechanics. We’re watching how you handle instruction and how you compete with integrity.

Why We May Have to Limit Team Size

Here’s the practical reality: we play and practice on a public golf course that we share with paying patrons. That means our tee times, practice space, and course access are limited, not by choice, but by circumstance. If the number of players trying out is more than the course can reasonably accommodate, we may need to limit our roster size.

To be clear: we will not cut players unless the number of golfers trying out makes it necessary. Cuts are a last resort, not a starting assumption. Our goal is to build the largest team we can responsibly support on a shared course, not to shrink the team for its own sake.

The Two-Day Format

• Monday, August 10 — All candidates trying out will complete the skills screening described above. Meanwhile, returning players from last year’s team will play a qualifying round of 18 holes.
• Tuesday, August 11 — Based on Day 1 performance, some candidates will be invited back for a second day of tryouts to give coaches a fuller picture of their game. Returning players will play a second qualifying round of 18 holes.
• Not every new candidate will need a second day. Some players’ Day 1 performance will be enough for coaches to make a confident evaluation, and their tryout process will conclude after Monday.
